Last minute World Book Day ideas
Welp! It’s World book day in 2 days and you have no idea what to dress your child as. Don’t panic. We have you covered.
We’ve gathered together a collection of dressing up ideas that you might be able to cobble together at the last minute.
Recycle other costumes!
These days there’s a book written for everything! The majority of our favourite Children’s films have also been made in to books. So your kid wants to dress as Buzz Lughtyear? Go ahead. Toy Story is a book as well as a film. The same goes for the princesses. And don’t forget the majority of our beloved superheroes all started out in comics. They’re books! Kinda.
You can also reuse Halloween costumes.
A Witch costumes could be used for the Witch in Room on the Broom. A skeleton costume could be used for a skeleton in Funnybones.
I only have one rule for Jenson when it comes to using other costumes for world book day.
He has to have at least read the book.
Characters
Matilda - Quentin Blake draws Matilda wearing a plain blue dress and white shoes/trainers. Add a white cardigan for a look similar to the film and don’t forget the all important book. (Or Newt in a jar of water if you’re feeling adventurous)
Mr Bump - Mr bump is probably the easiest. Dress in all blue and wrap a couple of bandages around your head and body. If you want to go all out, paint your face blue!
Harry Potter characters - when we think of the Harry Potter main trio, we tend to think of them in their school uniform. Which depending on your own child’s school uniform could be easy enough to replicate. But don’t forget that a lot of the time they also dress in their normal clothes. Find what’s closest and grab a stick for a wand.

Dennis the Menace - The iconic black and red striped top, black shorts, red socks and black shoes/boots. Don’t forget the messy hair and a bit of dirt on the knees.
Alternatively, the US version of Dennis wore a set of red dungarees with a striped t shirt.

Thing 1 and Thing 2 - Thing 1 and Thing 2 can be done as simply or as complicated as you wish. A simple red t shirt which a paper circle safety pinned on will do. Or you could go for a full onesie and die your hair

Words
An alternative for Characters on World book day is to dress as certain words. Or even to just stick letters all over your clothes.
Vibrant - dress in full neon
Sleepy - wear you pjs
Creative - dress as an artist
Brave - dress as someone you think is brave
Fragile - be covered in bubble wrap and fragile postage tape.
Extinct - be a dinosaur
